A closer look

Look at the cable and the system around it.

Lift cables work with the springs to support and move the door. A damaged or displaced cable can affect how the door is supported and how evenly it moves. Visible fraying, a hanging cable or a tilted door is a reason to stop using the system.

A cable issue may be the original failure or the result of another problem. The spring system, cable routing and connected parts need checking to find and repair the cause.

Do not touch or adjust damaged cables, drums or bottom brackets. Keep clear of the affected door and stop using the opener.

Start with what you notice

Does any of this sound familiar?

01

Frayed strands or visible wear

A cable with damaged strands needs professional attention. Do not handle it to check the damage or continue using the door to test it.

02

A loose or hanging cable

Slack can accompany a spring or alignment problem. A cable’s appearance alone cannot confirm the full repair needed.

03

Uneven movement or a tilted door

A door rising unevenly may have a cable or other lift-system fault. Leave the door in place and describe its position when requesting help.

Arranging service

What to expect
when you call.

01

Share what you can see

From a safe distance, note which side is affected and whether the door is tilted. There is no need to touch or move the cable.

02

Understand the connected parts

Discuss whether cable replacement alone addresses the problem or whether the spring, drum, pulley or another component also needs work.

03

Confirm the work needed

Review the parts being replaced, the reason for the recommendation and the checks needed before the door returns to normal use.

Understanding your estimate

What goes into
the cost?

Parts, labor and access to the door affect the estimate. Ask what the quoted price includes and whether any additional charges apply.

Tell us about your door
  • 01The door’s lift system and required cable specification
  • 02The condition of both cables and connected components
  • 03Any damage caused by uneven or off-track movement
  • 04The door’s position, access and applicable service fees

Before you call

Questions about cable repair.

Have a question about your door? Call us or get in touch.

Ask us about your door
01Is a loose cable always a broken cable?

No. A cable can go slack or slip out of place because of a spring or alignment problem. A technician needs to assess the system before deciding whether the cable needs replacement and what else requires attention.

02Can I replace a garage door cable myself?

Garage door cables and their attachments can be exposed to high spring tension. Do not loosen, adjust or remove them. Stop using the door and contact a trained door technician.

03Does cable repair include spring replacement?

Only when the condition of the spring system makes that work necessary. Ask for an explanation of each recommended part and whether it addresses the original failure or related damage. The estimate should say which parts and labor are included.

04Which service should I request if the door is also off track?

Describe both symptoms in one request. Tell us that a cable appears loose or damaged and that the door is crooked or out of its track. You do not need to identify the failed part before contacting us.
